While swinging, we experience the full range of emotions, from the soothing rhythm of moving back and forth to the excitement of traveling rapidly through space and time. These experiences evoke the unrestricted movement we enjoyed before birth in the womb, along with feelings of safety and love.

Swinging is an integral part of human development. Consider human evolution and our ancestors, chimpanzees, who spent millions of years freely swinging through the treetops. During this time, swinging stimulated their cerebellum, which is responsible for coordinating movement, and improved their balance, thinking, and language skills, as well as the development of emotional regulation.

It is now scientifically proven that swinging develops our sensory system, specifically our vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Vestibular stimulation occurs when we move through space and time. At that point, the three semicircular canals in the inner ear respond to movement and acceleration in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal planes, directly stimulating our sense of balance. The proprioceptive system receives information from our muscles and joints as our bodies move through space. This system is also developed by stimulating the vestibular system through swinging. Our central nervous system processes this information and prompts us to respond to the stimuli.

Inside the womb, the fetus can move freely in every direction, floating in the amniotic fluid. After birth, the child encounters gravity, and their limbs feel “heavy”; moreover, their nervous system is still immature for performing coordinated movements. A rapid developmental process begins. Its obvious milestones include the baby beginning to turn their head toward sounds and light, tracking objects with their eyes, and then, as they gradually gain control of their limbs, first reaching awkwardly for objects and eventually reaching their goals with increasing precision. Integrating the information gathered by the senses (sight, hearing, and touch), along with kinesthetic awareness of the environment (proprioception), helps the child develop normally.

In summary, the beneficial effects of swinging are:

  • it develops the cerebral cortex through forward-and-backward and up-and-down movements,
  • it gently stimulates the brain center responsible for balance,
  • it helps develop conscious awareness of the body's position,
  • the approaching and receding, moving environment helps collect and process sensory information,
  • sensory integration provides a foundation for more complex learning and behavior,
  • it helps improve motor skills and develop both gross and fine motor skills,
  • the muscles relax, and the child becomes calm and relaxed; accordingly, it may also provide a solution for sleep problems.

Premature babies initially have less developed sensory perception, especially in the tactile and vestibular areas. Several studies have examined the effects of multisensory and vestibular-proprioceptive stimulation in premature infants, and their results clearly show that stimulation has a beneficial effect on both their development and sleep patterns. Thus, gentle swinging begun at an appropriate time may be beneficial even for premature babies. The details should be discussed with a physiotherapist or pediatrician.

Swinging is therefore a developmental tool known since ancient times and available to all age groups, whether outdoors or at home. Gentle, safe swinging is possible from birth in the form of a so-called reclining baby swing, which does not put strain on the spine or deform the head, even when the baby lies on their back for several hours. Certain reclining swings, when properly suspended, can move in every direction, providing an additional benefit for nervous-system development, while older children can already experience the carefree thrill of rushing in every direction in seated swings.

Swinging offers positive benefits for healthy children, children requiring developmental support, and children suffering from neurological disorders alike. Swinging is therefore a fun, limitless opportunity through which we can support our child's healthy development while they play.
